Shredd ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application and related services.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Information You Provide
- Account Information: When you create an account, we collect your name, email address, and password.
- Profile Information: You may provide additional information such as your skill level, preferred sport (skiing or snowboarding), avatar, and home resort.
- Gear Information: If you choose to track your equipment, we store details about your skis, snowboards, boots, and other gear.
- Group Information: When you create or join groups, we store group names, member lists, meeting points, and cover images.
1.2 Automatically Collected Information
- Location Data: With your permission, we collect precise GPS location data during ski sessions to track your runs, calculate statistics (distance, speed, vertical drop), and provide route analysis. This includes foreground location tracking while actively recording and optional background location for continuous session tracking.
- Device Information: We collect device type, operating system, and app version for compatibility and troubleshooting purposes.
- Usage Data: We collect information about how you use the app, including screens visited, features used, and session duration.
1.3 Third-Party Integration Data
If you choose to connect third-party services, we may receive data from:
- Strava: Activity data, workout history, and profile information when you authorize the connection.
- Garmin Connect: Activity data, GPS routes, heart rate, and fitness metrics obtained through Garmin APIs solely for the purpose of providing activity tracking, analytics, and features within the Shredd application, and only after you explicitly authorize the connection.
- Apple Health (iOS): Workout data for syncing activities to your health records.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the collected information to:
- Provide and maintain the Shredd application and services
- Track and analyze your ski/snowboard sessions with accurate statistics
- Enable social features including groups, friend connections, and real-time location sharing
- Provide personalized route recommendations based on your skill level
- Generate AI-powered daily ski plans
- Display resort information, snow reports, and lift/trail status
- Improve our services through aggregated, anonymized usage analytics
- Send push notifications for friend requests, group invites, and snow alerts (with your permission)
- Contribute to crowdsourced trail heatmaps and route time estimates (opt-in only)
3. Information Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. Data obtained from Garmin Connect is not sold, rented, or used for advertising, marketing, or profiling purposes. We may share information in the following circumstances:
- With Your Consent: When you explicitly authorize sharing, such as posting to social media or sharing with friends in the app.
- With Group Members: Your location and status may be shared with members of groups you join during active sessions.
- Third-Party Services: When you connect external services like Strava or Garmin, data is shared according to those services' privacy policies.
- Service Providers: We may share data with service providers who assist in operating our application (hosting, analytics).
- Legal Requirements: We may disclose information if required by law or to protect our rights and safety.
4. Data Security
We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information, including:
- Encrypted data transmission using HTTPS/TLS
- Secure password hashing
- Regular security audits and updates
- Access controls limiting employee access to personal data
5. Data Retention
We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide services. You may delete your account and all associated data at any time using the in-app deletion feature or by contacting us. This includes data obtained from connected third-party services such as Garmin Connect, which will be deleted or anonymized upon account deletion or disconnection.
6. Your Rights and Choices
You have the right to:
- Access: Request a copy of your personal data
- Correction: Update or correct inaccurate information
- Deletion: Delete your account and all associated data directly within the app (Profile > Settings > Delete Account), or by contacting us
- Portability: Export your activity data
- Withdraw Consent: Disable location tracking or disconnect third-party services (including Garmin Connect) at any time through app settings, after which no new data will be collected from those services
6.1 Account Deletion
You can delete your Shredd account and all associated data at any time by:
- In-App: Navigate to Profile > Account > Delete Account. A confirmation dialog will explain what data will be permanently deleted.
- By Email: Contact us at privacy@shredd.org with your account email address.
When you delete your account, the following data is permanently removed:
- Account information (name, email, password)
- Profile information (skill level, avatar, preferences)
- All recorded ski/snowboard runs and GPS data
- Friends list and group memberships
- Gear and equipment records
- Connected third-party service data (Strava, Garmin)
- Achievements and statistics
Account deletion is typically processed immediately. Some data may be retained for up to 30 days in backups before being permanently purged.
7. Location Data Specifics
Location tracking is central to the Shredd experience. Here's how we handle it:
- Location data is only collected when you actively start a recording session
- You control when recording starts and stops
- Background location (if enabled) allows continuous tracking during a session even when the app is minimized
- We use adaptive GPS accuracy based on your movement and battery level to optimize performance
- You can view, analyze, and delete any recorded session at any time
8. Children's Privacy
Shredd is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected such information, please contact us immediately.
9. International Data Transfers
Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your country of residence. We ensure appropriate safeguards are in place to protect your data in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the new policy in the app and updating the "Last updated" date. Your continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
